My E-Reader Dilemma!
Hey everyone!!!
I have successfully convinced my parents to get me an e-reader for Christmas! Yay! However, I have run into a tiny little problem… I HAVE NO IDEA WHICH ONE TO ASK FOR!!!! They all look so amazing and they all have the same basic features.
I would love to get all of your opinions on this! Help me out on this one?
Keep in mind that I live in Canada and my parents don’t know how to use the computer. They would need to go buy the e-reader in person and don’t want me to order anything online on their behalf, so the Kindle will not be an option for me 🙁
Please leave a comment with the e-reader you have or would love to get based on reviews or friends and family. Don’t forget to mention how much you like it!
Thank you!

I just bought a Kobo WiFi last week and am loving it. I picked it because it’s the most Canadian friendly and affordable. The eBook selection is good and I didn’t need one with all the extras. I have other gadgets that play music, videos, surf the web, etc. I just wanted something to read eBooks with. It took me forever to decide though, so good luck!

@Carmel Thank you for your comment! The Kobo WiFi is the e-reader I had originally wanted and still do. There just isn’t enough ratings out there for me to know how people like it haha. But I really appreciate your comment, so far its a big struggle between Kobo and Sony however, you do make a great point that it’s not a necessity to have all the other gadgets on the e-reader.

I think you might need to teach them to use the computer — because I LOVE LOVE LOVE my kindle. But I heard the Nook is pretty good. Do they have Canadian Barnes & Noble?? I wouldn’t go for the color though because the battery runs out very quickly because of the back-light. Between the Kindle and the Nook I think they have the biggest eBook selection.

@ParaJunkee *Cries* I’ve heard and read soo many great reviews on the Nook and Kindle but, unfortunately my parents don’t know how to use the computer and don’t want me to order it on their behalf :(. I can only find Barnes&Noble locations in the U.S. and the closest one is way to far from here in Montreal. Thank you for commenting!!! I will get my very own Kindle some day…

ohh boo, i have a Kindle 3 and i ADORE it, best one in my opinion.
Nook would be next, i think they have them in books-a-millions and barnes and nobles (i think targets has kindles actually or best buy)
if not. then i don tknow, id only use one with e-ink as its the easiest to read and its not backlit.
Dec 04, 2010 @ 11:37:11
@LunaMoth Thank you for stopping by, I knoww everyone’s been telling me to get a Kindle but they are no where near me 🙁 boo! Kobo has e-ink so that’s a plus!

A lot of the stores carry them all now. I was at Wal Mart last night and saw Kobo, Kindle and Nook there. I’ve seen Kindle in my Target too.
My friend had a Sony and hated it. Never used it, bought a Nook and loves it. Uses it all the time. But I have another friend who has a Sony and likes it. It’s a hard decision. I have another friend who got the Nook last year. Loved it and got Nook color this year.

Everyone’s been praising the Nook lately but it’s not available to us Canadians. 🙁 The Kindle is, and right now with the exchange rate being at par it’s an okay deal but who’s to say how long it’ll stay that way? Also, when purchasing things in US funds most credit cards bill a surcharge so keep an eye on that too.
Hehe that’s funny about your parents refusing to order online. 😛
Good Luck! 🙂
Dec 04, 2010 @ 23:01:45
@Kelley Vitollo, I looked at all the Wal Marts here they only have Kobo or Sony & there are no Targets here 🙁 I’ve heard alot of different opinions of the Sony as well.
@Carmel Thank you! I know right? There is always a catch when we purchase something in US with credit cards haha. Yea they don’t want me to buy it online because they want to buy it themselves.. I just sit and pout lol
Thank you!

Hi Lucy!
Congrads on getting an ereader! I have a Sony but I don’t recommend it. It takes forever to load or even turn the page. And after having it only 8 mths it totally died on my and I had to pay $40 to have it replaced with a refurbished one from Sony.
Good luck!

@Crystal Thank you for your comment I really appreciate it. So far looks like Kobo is in the lead by alot haha but, we will see I have until .. hm tomorrow to decide YIKES!

Hey, Just passing through and I saw the ebook debate. And thought i would share, my thoughts, lol
I too live in Canada and wondered about which to get and I did get the NOOK. I love it. You can still get it in Canada, you just dont get the one on the 3G network, as we dont have it set up in Canada. I didnt by the Kindle because it lacked the ability to play different types of files, mainly the epub files. It is also a process to transfer other file types to the Kindle and I have heard that you have to pay for them too.
I also did not get the kobo as I did not like the button used to navigate the system and just found that it was flimsy, when compared to the other ereaders out there.
I also did not like that the Sony Ereaders I was looking at were all touch screen…smudges on the screen would drive me crazy.
The main thing you need to be aware of if you do buy a Nook, is that in order to buy books from Barns and Noble you have to have an American billing address (you can just use a family member or friend down there). I havent had any problems with my nook, it’s Great, easy to use.
If you have any questions about the Nook, either post something here or on one of my posts on my blog
Cheers!!!!

@J-9 I really appreciate your thoughts on my dilemma hehe :). I was thinking about the Nook because I really like the way it looks and the same reasons you said.. However, I don’t know anyone in my family with an american address so that would cause a problem. Although the navigation button on the Kobo isn’t favorable, I do like the way it works (it’s quick and easy to use.) The Sony would drive me crazy with the finger prints as you said haha thanks for pointing that out!
Btw thank you for stopping by! I’m following you 🙂

I’m getting a Kobo. I’ve played with Sony, Kobo, and the various tablet ones while working in a bookstore. The problem with Kindles anyhow is that you can’t get any library books! It ties you only to Amazon! If you do any type of reviewing of ebooks eventually, you want something that will work with egalleys.

@Bri Thank you for stopping by! I’m now a follower of your blog :). And thank you for your input! I see your point, and I agree with you.

hi Lucy! just an update. i got a call earlier from my Aunt and it’s confirmed. she got me the Nook & bought a cover with it with an LED attached. i was so ecstatic because that was what i really wanted as a Nook cover. got my wish. i’m waiting for it to be shipped. hopefully i can get it by next week. let you know soon. yahoooooooo! c”,)
Dec 06, 2010 @ 11:30:09
@aobibliophile That’s awesome!!! yayy!!!
Dec 06, 2010 @ 18:29:23
@aobibliophile I have the exact same cover for my nook and I love it as well. It comes in handy when the light on a flight above you are out.
@moonlight Gleam, the only time you need an address for the nook, is when you buy books from Barns and Noble. You can buy books from Kobo and they work just as well on the Nook, as they in the epub format. You wont be able to buy them off Amazon either, as they come only in the amazon format.
Hope that helps
Cheers
