DREAMWALK is a romantic mixed beat of time travel and mythology for both teens and adults. After the death of her mother, Chloe Hawthorn is haunted by terrifying nighttime hallucinations. Determined to take control of her dreams, she uses them to find Shane Anderson, a charming and troubled musician whose online videos have been holding her in thrall. She finds him in the Dreamtime, sweating out heroin detox in a run-down rehab center.

Chloe sets out to find Shane in the waking world and discovers her dreams have been taking her into the past. Horrified, Chloe realizes Shane doesn’t survive his addictions. In order to save him, Chloe must master her Australian mother’s legacy — the secret of walking the Dreaming through time. But what price will Chloe pay for this Dreamwalk and will she save Shane only to lose him forever?

 My Review:
Two years after the death of Chloe’s mother, she and her father have moved to New York City, leaving behind all her friends and the memories they once had. Chloe has nightmares each night of her falling down, being in plane crashes without actually crashing, that only seem to be getting worse as the time passes. One day her best friend Trish sends her a link through e-mail with hopes of cheering her up. When Chloe follows the link to a website that shows a video of a boy named Shane playing guitar, she becomes obsessed and begins to see him in her dreams. In her dreams, she imagines visiting Shane in a dark room, which resembles a cell, seeing him very unhappy.
At the time the videos were created, Shane is in rehab for his addiction to Heroin. He and his best friend Josh are in a band together and hoping to become very successful musicians. During his stay in rehab, Shane becomes to have dreams of this girl named Chloe, the same girl who is having dreams of him. Shane believes that his medication has been tainted and she is just a figure of his imagination.
Chloe and Shane begin to fall in love for one another in their dreams, but what happens when they find out that their dreams are reality?
The story is written in alternating perspectives beginning with Chloe in present time, then with Shane in which his point of view is described through his journal entries during his stay at the rehab center. I personally enjoyed Chloe’s perspective in Dreamwalk as she was a more relatable character, facing many struggles yet showed determination to overcome them all.
My initial thought of Dreamwalk was that it would be light read, however, right from the beginning, the story held powerful emotions captured through Sarah MacManus’ writing. The characters held a lot of depth throughout the novel and were well-developed. Both Chloe and Shane are broken, they feel abandoned and lonely. During their encounters their relationship progresses rather quickly, as they were in desperate need of one another given all the negativity surrounding them.
My favorite element of the novel was Sarah MacManus’ idea of Dreamwalking. I also enjoyed that although there were many characters presented in the novel, they all played important roles. I also appreciate that Sarah MacManus presents many lessons to be learned within Dreamwalk that readers can take with them after reading this novel.
Dreamwalk is a wonderful novel that will take you on an emotional rollercoaster, each chapter filled with fear, love, temptation, addiction, and peace. Sarah MacManus’ writing is powerful in Dreamwalk, giving me the sense as though I were living through Chloe, feeling all her pain, sorrow, and fears.
Please note that there are some sexual encounters in the novel as well as the discussion of drugs.
I would recommend this novel to those who enjoy Adult novels with passion, and darkness.
