Griffin Rising is an urban fantasy about an apprentice angel and his coming of age under the tutelage of a father-like mentor. As one of the mysterious Terrae Angeli, Griffin secretly navigates life among humans while preparing for the trial-by-combat every apprentice must pass or become mortal.
  Jessica’s Review:
13 year old Griffin is an angel, well… an earth angel. He doesn’t have the wings of celestial angels (even though he can fly) but he does have a special affinity for earth and fire magic. Along with his mentor Basil, Griffin will be training to become a full angel/guardian when he is 16, that is if he passes the test. If  he doesn’t? He will become mortal.
Griffin Rising is more than just a story about an angel-in-training trying to learn what he needs to in order to become a full angel. It’s also about Griffin overcoming his past with his earlier and cruel mentor Nicopolis, learning how to function in human society and how one person can make everything and everyday worth living.
I really enjoyed the relationship between Griffin and Basil, it’s heartwarming and fun. The story is light and has little sections where you get to read Griffin and Basils (and later Katie’s) diary/journal entries. These add insight into the minds of the main characters and a bit of humor and wit as well. I also liked that while Basil and Griffin are angles do good things and helping people, they are not always successful, this makes them more human to me and more relatable.
The romance is sweet, there is no sex or real violence or swearing, and there is a good emphasis on ‘doing the right thing’ by people while remaining not preachy. I appreciated this very much.
The ending, oh dear.. I so hope there is another book coming because that ending made me want to simultaneously scream and cry. It is heart wrenching and bittersweet to say the least, it is also a great way to set up the next book (please?!) I highly recommend this short but great book if you’re looking for something quick to immerse yourself in, you will not be disappointed.
