The Inspiration Behind My Book
I grew up in Rio de Janeiro with my unforgettable grandma. She was a mix of Zsa Zsa Gabor (flirty and with a strong personality), Carmen Miranda (a little loud, not afraid to speak her mind, and a little exaggerated) and gangsta rap (tendency to swear). She wouldn’t hesitate in saying that you are a little overweight or point that you look older than your age, even if she have had just met you.
She wouldn’t think twice before ratting me out to my parents when I’d broken something in the house or if I hadn’t had studied that day. If I started to do something that she considered dangerous, like climbing a tree, she would yell at me intensely until she’d scared the hell out of me and almost made me fall – she’d do the same when my parents were driving the car for practically no reason.
But as eccentric as she was, she was very religious and connected to nature. She had grown up on a farm and learned with her Portuguese mother everything about plants and herbs—a knowledge that she had never forgotten and that she used it to treat those she loved for many years.
She would always have a natural remedy for us when we got injured, caught a cold, or even acted a bit hyper. If we were having trouble sleeping or feeling nauseated, she would make a fresh tea with the herbs she had cultivated in her small garden.
My grandma was also very superstitious: we couldn’t pass under a ladder, or leave the door of the closet open, or open an umbrella inside our home, or even walk backwards. Those things, among others, could attract bad vibes, according to her.
Another belief that she had was that some dreams carried hidden messages, and that if we interpreted them correctly, we could avoid mishaps or actually prepare ourselves for something that was about to happen. She used to swear that when she was young she had a dream that her dad would pass away and just a few days later it happened almost exactly as she had dreamed it. She said it was at that moment that she started giving her dreams more credit, just like her mother taught her.
My grandma passed away a few years ago, but I hope her sensibility and respect for living things are still able to inspire not only me, but also those who read my YA novel, The Chosen of Gaia. I invite you to live the story of Albert, a teenage boy who receives an invitation that will change his life, as he becomes part of an advanced society that values nature’s occult mysteries as much as my grandma did.
