Divergent Paths Blog Tour: Author Guest Post With Holly Barbo

Holly Barbo has kindly agreed to guest post here about her work, and share her inspiration for her newest release, Divergent Paths.

 About The Author:

Holly Barbo’s world is shaped by her love of her family, the beauty of the natural world in Northwest Washington State and an irrepressible creative drive.
Living where the scenery is incredible with a rich abundance of wildlife “is so special and soothing that it feels like a quiet kind of magic,” according to Barbo. She is drawn to creating stories where there is just a bit of something unworldly, perhaps it is magic or psychic skills. Her stories are mostly in non-urban settings and usually have some focus on nature, building a discordant drama inside the peaceful frame.

 Guest Post:

Lucy asked me how I came up with the title “Divergent Paths” for my second book. It’s a great question and I thank you for asking!

Often when an author is writing a book, the title is in their head. It may be tweaked a bit but it is already part of the weave of the story. It didn’t happen that way with my second book. The early working title was “Rings of Illness.” Part of the story line dealt with a virulent disease but there were also some dangerous elements that were indicative of a sickness in the society that had to be checked before they got out of hand. So the original title worked. It just didn’t feel right.
When I gave the finished manuscript to my publisher/editor Sheenah Freitas of Paper Crane Books I told her that I felt the title should be changed. After she finished reading it, she agreed and we began a conversation that resembled a ping-pong game…throwing out words and sometimes title ideas for the other person to consider.
Coming up with just the right title is important and we wanted to get it right. The brainstorming got fierce. Sheenah put several of the candidate words up on a bulletin board and would shuffle them around trying out various combinations. She would test market any promising ideas. I was doing the same with people I knew. Looking back on the process we had at one time twenty-one words or word combinations that we were trying to manipulate into just the right title.

Here’s the list:

We rearranged words and wrestled with the concept for close to a week. There were some words I liked and some she favored but we couldn’t come up with a combination that both of us thought really fit the story. The whole process was very reminiscent of a couple picking out names for their baby!

I began to keep my iPad next to my bed at night so if an idea came to me I could write it down. I had the screen set on email and addressed to Sheenah. All I would have to do is fill in the words in the message and hit send then fall back to sleep. Sheenah is three hours ahead of me with her email alarm turned off at night. She would pick up any messages at the beginning of her day. Eventually that’s what did it. I awoke at about 2:30 a.m. with this idea. You’ll notice that “Divergent Paths” is not part of the above list but it hit both of us right. My baby had a name! All we had left to do was finish the rounds of editing and polishing, formatting, design the cover and…well you know the rest.  😀
