Don’t hate us cause we’re dead – The zombies of Bad Blood

As a writer, I sometimes feel that zombies in literature can lose a bit of their scare-factor. The horror of a gross, smelly grabby, animated corpse reaching out to taste your flesh can be easily lost if the peril is diluted with too much description, or not enough. Movies tend to beat books hands down with zombie fear, as in a blink of the eye their whole horrible appearance can be took in by the viewer as they pull-apart their hapless victims. With a book, zombie scenes need to be laid out in a certain way to ensure they’re not just a spare part of the scenery.

The zombies in my YA horror novel Bad Blood are one of the stars of the story. There’s a lot of them, and I think that is key to ensuring they’re fright factor – just one alone could be walked away from, but hundreds baring down on you might incur a little more of an adrenaline rush panic. Now, the question on everyone’s lips…slow or fast zombies? Well, Bad Blood is told from a vampire’s point of view, so the zombies to her are pretty slow, but to the humans they can be uncommonly fast. And as much as the slow, inevitable shuffle of the undead could be perceived as almost comical – I certainly wouldn’t want to see one lumbering down a dark English alley.

The biggest obstacle for me to overcome with Bad Blood was making sure that the vampires weren’t simply upstaging the zombies. They had to be dangerous to them as well as the human survivors. So I introduced a Vambie. A vampire infected with zombie ‘bad blood’. A self-proclaimed royal zombie who creates an almost hive mind effect. Like I said, zombies are scarier in packs so to have a kind of commander of the undead who thinks beyond the normal ‘Urg, braaaains’ mentality and that has the ability to draw zombies together – constantly increasing the horde size – well, that changes the normal zombie dynamic.

So my last questions to you are, would zombies scare you? If you turned on your TV right now to a public service announcement telling you to barricade your doors, to not try and reach loved ones, and to decapitated any infected crossing your threshold– would you trust a vampire to protect you?
