Q: What was your inspiration for writing Not a Drop To Drink?

I watched a documentary called Blue Gold, which is about a projected water shortage for our planet. It was sobering and downright alarming. I went to sleep very thankful for my backyard pond, and I dreamt I was teaching a young child how to operate a rifle that night, as we hid in the basement and prepared to defend our water source. I woke up and said, “Hey – I just wrote a book in my head.”

Q: Which character in the novel do you relate to most and why?

That’s tough one –  I think most writers will tell you that there’s a little piece of them in every one of their characters. I’d say for this one though that the character I relate to most is Mother. She has made some very difficult decisions about how she was going to raise her child in a world gone insane. A lot of readers will probably think that Mother’s choices weren’t always the right or the moral choice, but she raised her child to survive. In the end I think we’re all downright feral when it comes to those we love, Mother just doesn’t bother to hide it.

Q: Is there a message or multiple messages in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
Definitely. NOT A DROP TO DRINK is a survival story. In the world my characters inhabit, survival doesn’t just mean finding water – it means defending it from other people. There’s a very gray area where black and white are muddied, and the question of what one person is willing to do to survive can have a pretty gruesome answer. There definitely are situations where right and wrong are clear cut and obvious, but… not always.

Lynn knows every threat to her pond: drought, a snowless winter, coyotes, and, most importantly, people looking for a drink. She makes sure anyone who comes near the pond leaves thirsty, or doesn’t leave at all.

Confident in her own abilities, Lynn has no use for the world beyond the nearby fields and forest. Having a life means dedicating it to survival, and the constant work of gathering wood and water. Having a pond requires the fortitude to protect it, something Mother taught her well during their quiet hours on the rooftop, rifles in hand.

But wisps of smoke on the horizon mean one thing: strangers. The mysterious footprints by the pond, nighttime threats, and gunshots make it all too clear Lynn has exactly what they want, and they won’t stop until they get it….

With evocative, spare language and incredible drama, danger, and romance, debut author Mindy McGinnis depicts one girl’s journey in a barren world not so different than our own.
