The first writing project I remember was one I did in first grade. What began as an attempt to improve my handwriting by practicing became a collection of short stories about the life of one of my toys. I still have the binder in which my mom and I took turns writing those stories, and I haven’t stopped writing since then: rhyming poems when I was younger, short stories in college, and pages and pages of articles for newspapers and magazines since high school. Writing was always something I did, and it was always something I wanted to do.

I didn’t make a conscious decision to try to become a writer, though, a Real Writer, a professional, until I’d already been writing for years. After college, I moved to Scotland to go to graduate school in history. I thought I’d enjoy living somewhere new for a little while, and maybe I’d end up becoming a history professor who wrote fiction on the side.

Before I’d left school, someone had told me that 80 or 90 percent of life in Scotland would be the same, but that it would be the differences I would notice. That turned out to be true. I’ve always been an observer, but living far from home made me a sharper one. And soon, the things I noticed weren’t just observations — they became stories. First, they were straightforward newspaper and magazine articles, about Scottish musicians, local events, and travel, and then essays about my experiences. All the observation and exploration and writing I did sharpened my writing muscles. I had gotten the idea for the book that became This Is How I Find Her, my first novel, before I’d left the U.S., but it was in Scotland that I really settled in to work with a clearer writer’s eye. By the time I left, I’d abandoned my plan to write on the side; I couldn’t not write.

Author: Sara Polsky
Publication Date: September 1st, 2013
Sophie Canon has just started her junior year when her mother tries to kill herself. Sophie has always lived her life in the shadow of her mother’s bipolar disorder, monitoring her medication, rushing home after school to check on her instead of spending time with friends, and keeping her mother’s diagnosis secret from everyone outside their family. But when the overdose lands Sophie’s mother in the hospital, Sophie no longer has to watch over her. She moves in with her aunt, uncle, and cousin, from whom she has been estranged for the past five years. Rolling her suitcase across town to her family’s house is easy. What’s harder is figuring out how to build her own life.
