Hello Moonlight Gleamers! We have an Author Interview, Giveaway and Reviews today! Katlyn Duncan will be talking to us about her inspiration for becoming an author, and the reviews will be for both novels in the The Life After series. Giveaway is at the bottom of the page!

 About the Author: Katlyn Duncan

Katlyn Duncan was born and raised in a small town in western Massachusetts. Her overactive imagination involved invisible friends, wanting to be a Disney Princess and making up her own stories. Her bibliophile mom always encouraged her love of reading and that stayed with her since. Even though she works full time in the medical field Katlyn has always made time for books, whether she is reading or writing them.

Katlyn now lives in southern Connecticut with her husband and adorable Wheaten Terrier and she is thrilled to finally share her stories with the world.

Author Interview:

I have always been a writer. As a child I wrote whatever stories popped into my head in the form of short stories, plays or movie scripts. I enjoy exploring the ‘what ifs’ of any situation that I encounter, or in the case of my books, the situations that randomly come to me. There has never been a time where I haven’t been writing and I can’t imagine a time where I won’t be.

I have always been an avid reader, devouring books by the shelf-full and exploring the worlds that other authors have created. Not until just a few years ago did I realize that these authors do what I’ve always done, they were just getting paid for it. From then on I honed my skills and I am so proud that I stuck with my writing and can officially call myself an author.

Thanks for having me!

I am giving a combined rating of 4 out of 5 moons to these novels. Check below for the reviews on both!

Title: Soul Taken & Soul Possessed
Author: Katlyn Duncan
Publisher: Carina UK
Format: eBook
Publication Date: June 2013
Overall: 4 out of 5

Book 1 in The Life After trilogy from Carina UK.

After-life just got a lot more complicatedMaggie is a Soul Collector. It’s her job to transport souls from the Living Realm to the After – but during a mission to find a stolen soul, she ends up stuck in a teen mean girl’s body.

Trapped, Maggie’s soul is catapulted into Ally’s life – and the human world she hasn’t experienced for one hundred years. But, as a descendant of the most powerful beings in the After, Maggie must rescue Ally before the girl’s soul dies…

To survive, Maggie must uncover devastating secrets – because with one soul taken by a terrifying enemy, Maggie’s could be next!

Soul Taken was definitely intriguing because at the beginning of the book Maggie is so prickly. She doesn’t seem to like anyone, and at first that kind of turned me off a bit. But then I got to know Maggie, and I started to realize that she was prickly because she didn’t know who she was. Her memories have been stolen-taken-saved for her. She also has been lied to about it the entire time.

Maggie ends up getting stuck in another person’s body and as to pretend to be them. While Maggie is stuck she ends up being able to make connections with the other people around her. She really starts to grow and care for them, and it is a huge thing because of how alone she was at the beginning.

Maggie stumbles upon a mystery while trapped in Ali’s body, and she starts to realize that this mystery is wrapped around her. She ends up meeting Jackson, a man who knew her in the past. Jackson can remember what she cannot. Jackson showed he really cared about her, and he ends up revealing what happened to Maggie all those years ago.

What is great about Soul Taken is that the main plot of the book ends up really being the setup for what is really going on. It was incredibly interesting to be able to watch it unfold and realize that Maggie being trapped in Ali’s body is just the beginning. I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars because at the beginning it did drag a little bit.

Life after Life

Now Maggie has been given the chance of her after-life to become a Guard, nothing will stand in her way. Not even the undeniable attraction she feels for her trainer and past love—Jackson. But when the battle between Shadowed and Guard begins again which side will she choose?

When her boss, Felix, partners Jackson and Maggie up with Ally and Cooper to investigate terrifying Shadowed activity, she doesn’t think it could get any worse. Jackson and Cooper barely tolerate each other and this time, Maggie isn’t just proving her loyalty to the Guard during one mission…she has a side mission too. One so secret and so dangerous she can’t tell a soul…

Soul Possessed was a kick you in the teeth kind of book from the moment it opened. Maggie and Jackson are finally beginning to talk, and Maggie is still reeling from what happened at the end of Soul Taken. I really wanted Maggie to give Jackson a chance here, because he worked so hard for her.

The Shadowed are on the move, and the Caeleste need to know why so they end up pairing Maggie, Jackson, Ali, and Cooper together in order to find the Shadowed. I really liked that Maggie begins to work together with Ali and Cooper. There is even an introduction to an amazing character Leha, who ended being one of my favorites in this book.

I don’t want to give away any spoilers so what I will say is that there is some craziness that happens and a few people have their true colors revealed. The big reason this book only gets 4 out of 5 stars instead of a full 5 is because of lies. I’m not a big fan of a person being kept in the dark, and that’s all that Maggie is. In the dark. It’s incredibly annoying because I want her to be able to make the right decision, but how can she if she doesn’t have all the facts?

Overall, I really enjoyed both of these books, and I can’t wait to my hands on the third one. It looks like it should be an amazing finish.

4/5 – An Enjoyable Read, Well Written
