First Book Of The Year 2014!
Hello Moonlight Gleamers,
Happy New Year from Team Moonlight Gleam Reviews!
Picking the next book to read can be rather challenging, given that there are so many great releases, series that we’ve been dying to finish, or books that all our bookish friends have been recommending. Of course, we can’t forget about the never-ending “to be read” or “plan to read” lists we prepare each year (or adding on to)…but I’m sure you can all agree that picking the very first book to read of the year adds quite a bit of pressure on our already stressful book picking decisions.
Although it may become a little stressful to make our picks, we should all see it as a great opportunity to finally decrease our never-ending reading lists!
The ladies here at Moonlight Gleam Reviews wanted to give a quick shout out to Sheila (Book Journey) for hosting this awesome feature – First Book Of The Year 2014!
Now, that being said, here are our first book picks of 2014:
Kasey’s Pick:
Taste of Darkness (Healer #3) by Maria V. Snyder
Taste of Darkness is the final book in Snyder’s Healer series. I have loved all of Snyder’s work since her first book Poison Study, so there really is no describing exactly how excited I am to be reading this. I ended up getting an ARC copy, but forced myself to wait until my copy came in (I’m just odd like that). It just released on December 31, 2013 so I am super excited to start reading this morning! I’ll definitely be letting you guys know how good it is!
Karla’s Pick:
NEVER FADE (The Darkest Minds #2) by ALEXANDRA BRACKEN
Never Fade is the sequel to Bracken’s TDM series, which began with The Darkest Minds in late 2012. There are no words to describe how much I adored book 1, and after a heartbreaking ending, I had been desperately counting down to the release of book 2. Unfortunately for me, Never Fade was released right in the middle of my midterms, so I haven’t had the chance to read it yet. Now that I’m in holiday mode, I figured I would get one of my most anticipated reads out of the way first. Hopefully it goes well!
Lucy’s Pick:
ASHES TO ASHES (Ashes #1) by MELISSA WALKER
Ashes to Ashes is the first instalment in Melissa Walker’s Ashes series, which recently released in December 2013. This has been on my next to read list for quite some time, among several other titles. Although selecting the next book to read can be quite a difficult task, selecting Ashes to Ashes as my first read in 2014 wasn’t as difficult as I thought it would be. Once I had finished reading my last book in 2013, I glanced over at my next-to-read pile on my bookshelf, and Ashes to Ashes was sticking out at me. I took it off my bookshelf, placed it on my bed, and my toy poodle, Bella, gave me her sign of approval, so I knew that this was it!
I can’t wait to dig into this read and share my thoughts with you al!
We’d love to know what book did you pick to be the first of 2014, so share them with us below!

My first book of 2014 is an ARC of Cursed by Destiny by Cecy Robson! It arrived in the post on the last day of 2013 so I took that as a sign to start it on the first day of 2014 cause I was finishing Rosalie Lario’s novella Heart of the Incubus that she had released on the 30th! I’m fully expecting to laugh and to cry reading this and already have laughed and had tears in my eyes and I’m only on page 78!

I wish I could get back to Maria Snyder. I loved the ‘Study’ trilogy but I just can’t get into her later books. It’s sad.

I wasn’t able to get into her other series either 🙁

I was a huge fan of her Study series, and the Glass series was kind of a let down but I have really enjoyed the Healer series. Avry reminds me alot of Yelena 🙂 and no love triangle!

I’m listening to Tricked by Kevin Hearne and plan to start Avenger’s Heat by Katie Reus very soon. So those will be my first audio / physical books of 2014.
Happy New Year ladies!
