Sleep No More by Aprilynne Pike Review

Title: Sleep No More
Author: Aprilynne Pike

Format: eBook
Publication Date: April 29, 2014
Overall: 3.5 out of 5 stars

The blockbuster film Inception meets Lisa McMann’s Wake trilogy in this dark paranormal thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Aprilynne Pike. This novel is also perfect for fans of Kelley Armstrong, Alyson Noel, and Kimberly Derting.

Charlotte Westing has a gift. She is an Oracle and has the ability to tell the future. But it doesn’t do her much good. Instead of using their miraculous power, modern-day Oracles are told to fight their visions—to refrain from interfering. And Charlotte knows the price of breaking the rules. She sees it every day in her wheelchair-bound mother and the absence of her father. But when a premonition of a classmate’s death is too strong for her to ignore, Charlotte is forced to make an impossible decision: continue following the rules or risk everything—even her sanity—to stop the serial killer who is stalking her town.

Sleep No More was a different kind of book than I normally read. It was definitely a thriller and kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. I really liked the Oracle premise, it was definitely interesting and I absolutely wanted to know more about that aspect.

I also really enjoyed Charlotte, I thought she was a great character and she really brought home the struggle that Oracle’s must go through. It would be incredibly difficult to not feel guilty over trading one person’s life for anothers, because changing fate does not come without consequences. Charlotte understood this better than anyone, but I really loved that she wasn’t just willing to let that be it for her. She still wanted to do good, and to help people.

There were a few plot twists, but definitely the romance aspect of this book was the least of my favorites. I pretty much saw what happened there coming from a mile away, and it made me feel bad for Charlotte, because she deserved so much better. This would definitely drop the overall feel of the book for me because it was just so cliche, and I feel the author could have done much better with the romance aspect.

I would also like to know alot more about the Oracle’s and Charlotte’s aunt Sierra. She has a very interesting story, and I feel like it would be absolutely fascinating to know more about it. I’ve heard this was supposed to be a standalone, but I’m really hoping the author decides to continue because despite it’s flaws it was a very intriguing read.

Overall, I would give this book 3.5 out of 5 stars. I really enjoyed everything but the romance, but it was such a large part of the book I can’t help but feel it really detracted from the overall enjoyment. Also, I really hope that the author continues with this, but the lack of knowing makes it difficult to rate higher. I will definitely be keeping a lookout to see if this series continues!

3.5/5 – A Great Read, Well-Written
