review

This is a series review of Michelle Hodkin’s Mara Dyer series. It includes all 3 books. The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, The Evolution of Mara Dyer, and The Retribution of Mara Dyer.

This series as whole was fantastic. I love that you start off with Mara not knowing what she is becoming, and I really enjoyed her journey towards figuring herself out. The first book, really hones in on what makes Mara and Noah different from other’s around them. It was a study on how they impact the world around them without doctors trying to mess with them. By the end of Unbecoming, I felt like I really understood that no matter how much good Mara wanted to do with her gift, it was always going to be destructive.

In Evolution we really began to see Mara unravel. While she isn’t crazy for believing that she could cause bad things to happen to people, I do think she started to unravel. Her anxiety, and the way that her mind processed things definitely began to deteriorate. I feel like Mara stopped seeing shades of gray and it really became more black and white for her. It was nice to get some other characters introduced, and I loved having Jamie back in the storyline. I also liked how Noah and Mara’s relationship progressed, although there were points that had me wondering how it functioned. I liked Noah, and he clearly understood her because of his own gift but Mara clearly was struggling more and it felt odd that he would stick around for that. I also really enjoyed the little snippets from Mara’s grandmother, she added a whole different dimension to the story, and I really liked her perspective. I was surprised by the explanation for Mara and Noah’s gifts. It was an awesome twist and it really blew me away.

Retribution was jam packed full of action from beginning to end. It lacked some of the emotional intimacy that the previous two books had, and that was definitely a downside for me. I liked the scenes with Noah, and especially with Mara’s brother Daniel. Daniel did end up playing a role in this book, and I loved that. The ending was good, although I would have wished for something more concrete. I really felt like there were a lot of questions unanswered, especially about the future.

This series was breathtakingly wonderful, and I couldn’t put it down from the minute I picked up the first one again! I would give this series 4.5 out of 5 stars. The last book was wonderful, but was missing some of the things that made the first book great!
