Grace Mae knows madness. She keeps it locked away, along with her voice, trapped deep inside a brilliant mind that cannot forget horrific family secrets. Those secrets, along with the bulge in her belly, land her in a Boston insane asylum.

When her voice returns in a burst of violence, Grace is banished to the dark cellars, where her mind is discovered by a visiting doctor who dabbles in the new study of criminal psychology. With her keen eyes and sharp memory, Grace will make the perfect assistant at crime scenes. Escaping from Boston to the safety of an ethical Ohio asylum, Grace finds friendship and hope, hints of a life she should have had. But gruesome nights bring Grace and the doctor into the circle of a killer who stalks young women. Grace, continuing to operate under the cloak of madness, must hunt a murderer while she confronts the demons in her own past.

In this beautifully twisted historical thriller, Mindy McGinnis, acclaimed author of Not a Drop to Drink and In a Handful of Dust, explores the fine line between sanity and insanity, good and evil—and the madness that exists in all of us.

review

A Madness so Discreet was absolutely amazing. This is not my typical genre at all. It was just the synopsis that intrigued me, and I thought I would give it a shot. I am so so glad I did. This book was beautifully written, the characters captivating, and the plot was phenomenal. The book is part mystery, part horror, and shamefully could be all too true. Grace was such a victim of her circumstances, but she never felt like a true victim to me. There is a strength in her, that I’m not sure I would possess in her situation.

Dr. Thornhollow was also an interesting contradiction, and I think his personal closeness to Grace got in the way when he was looking at certain aspects of Grace’s past. Because Grace could be so clear and level-headed, I think is idea of the trauma she suffered is so much less than what it actually was. I liked his character for most of the book, but the ending really made me upset with him and I do not think that I could forgive him for what he did.

This book was an odd story, I should warn you that the first part is about madness and insanity, Grace was kept in a standard insane asylum in Boston. When she finally escapes to an ethical asylum in Ohio, it turns into a more standard true crime story. I don’t like either of these things generally, but somehow in this book it worked and it sucked me in.

As much as I loved this book, the ending upset me so much, I cannot give it 5 stars. Grace deserved so much more justice than what she received, and all of her fellow victims deserved more justice. I would give it 4 out of 5 stars, and highly recommend it but with a warning that the ending will surprise and shock you.
