Seventeen years ago, an eclipse cloaked the kingdom of Relhok in perpetual darkness. In the chaos, an evil chancellor murdered the king and queen and seized their throne. Luna, Relhok’s lost princess, has been hiding in a tower ever since. Luna’s survival depends on the world believing she is dead.

But that doesn’t stop Luna from wanting more. When she meets Fowler, a mysterious archer braving the woods outside her tower, Luna is drawn to him despite the risk. When the tower is attacked, Luna and Fowler escape together. But this world of darkness is more treacherous than Luna ever realized.

With every threat stacked against them, Luna and Fowler find solace in each other. But with secrets still unspoken between them, falling in love might be their most dangerous journey yet.

With lush writing and a star–crossed romance, Reign of Shadows is Sophie Jordan at her best.

Reign of Shadows started off strong, and I was really interested in Luna. She seemed like a strong character and very self sufficient, but as the book went on, it became more and more obvious that she was going to rely heavily on Fowler. Now in some ways that was to be expected, there is a reveal pretty early on which helps make some sense of this. However, the book keeps trying to convince you that Luna is strong, but without really showing any of these characteristics.

Also, there was some BAD prose in this book. At one point Luna says “My hearing had long adapted to the darkness”. I’m not even sure what that means, but it wasn’t the only time there was some odd things that were said. I think the plot had a good base to it, but it just fell flat. Luna and Fowler were very typical Mary Sue type characters, and that just didn’t work for me.These two were completely one dimensional, and I really like well rounded characters in my books. I think there might be some redemption for this series in the future installments. Sophie Jordan is capable of writing a solid series with good characters, so hopefully that shows up in the next installments. However, I don’t think I will be reading them. 2 out of 5 stars.

Strong Start, Some Opportunities
