They say when life closes one door, another one opens.
This door happens to lead to paradise.
And a man I can never, ever have.

Still grieving the loss of her sister who died two years ago, the last thing Veronica “Ronnie” Locke needed was to lose her job at one of Chicago’s finest restaurants and have to move back in with her parents. So when a window of opportunity opens for her – running a kitchen at a small Hawaiian hotel – she’d be crazy not to take it.

The only problem is, the man running the hotel drives her crazy:
Logan Shephard.
It doesn’t matter that he’s got dark brown eyes, a tall, muscular build that’s sculpted from daily surfing sessions, and a deep Australian accent that makes your toes curl.
What does matter is that he’s a grump.
Kind of an asshole, too.
And gets under Ronnie’s skin like no one else.

But the more time Ronnie spends on the island of Kauai, falling in love with the lush land and its carefree lifestyle, the closer she gets to Logan. And the closer she gets to Logan, the more she realizes she may have pegged him all wrong. Maybe it’s the hot, steamy jungles or the invigorating ocean air, but soon their relationship becomes utterly intoxicating.

There’s just one major catch.

The two of them together would incite a scandal neither Ronnie, nor her family, would ever recover from.

Forbidden, Illicit, off-limits – sometimes the heat is worth surrendering to, even if you get burned.

Note: this is a standalone novel, unrelated to any previous books. It does NOT contain cheating of any kind.

*I just couldn’t wait to get this review out there, that’s how much this book spoke to me. I hope the review encourages everyone to get out there and read this book*

Heat Wave is a new favorite for me, I knew it would be the minute Karina Halle posted the prologue. This book has everything that I love in romance, and I stayed up waaaay to late in order to finish it. These two characters who have all the reasons in the world to stay away from each other but they just can’t help it. Veronica and Logan are just these two stubborn people, but in the end they are just meant to be together. I’m not sure how the author does it, but she also makes these wonderful flawed side characters who you just can’t help but love. I don’t know how she manages to make all of her characters relatable, but she does and it adds a whole new dimension to her stories. I think that’s why I’m such a big fan.

It’s no secret that I love Karina Halle’s writing, and while I do love some of her more heartbreaking romance (The Debt/The Play, I’m looking at you two) this book was perfectly balanced between lighthearted fun and a deeper more serious tone. There is a little bit of a Love, In English vibe here, and I think that’s mostly the age gap between these characters, and the fact that they know they will be judged for this relationship. Also, there is no setting that I have imagined more vividly. Kauai sounds beautiful, and it certainly doesn’t hurt that since I follow the author on Instagram, I got to see all of the beautiful pictures. Between those pictures and the book, I am seriously considering trying to plan my own vacation there, although my daughter would be only 3 so we will see! Suffice it to say this book reads gorgeously, not only are the characters real and evoke a real emotional response but Karina Halle paints a beautiful picture of this island and the people who live here. I can’t help but give it 5 out of 5 stars, and I know this book is getting added to the “favorites-to-re-read” list.
