A Torch Against the Night takes readers into the heart of the Empire as Laia and Elias fight their way north to liberate Laia’s brother from the horrors of Kauf Prison. Hunted by Empire soldiers, manipulated by the Commandant, and haunted by their pasts, Laia and Elias must outfox their enemies and confront the treacherousness of their own hearts.

In the city of Serra, Helene Aquilla finds herself bound to the will of the Empire’s twisted new leader, Marcus. When her loyalty is questioned, Helene finds herself taking on a mission to prove herself—a mission that might destroy her, instead.

This book. THIS BOOK. Gawd. I had held off on reading this once I realized it was going to be a trilogy, and then I found out there was going to be a fourth book so I put it off even more. However, I found myself in a slump so I re-listened to ‘An Ember in the Ashes’ and it was just so good that I couldn’t help myself. I got the audiobook and settled back in with some of the best narrators I’ve ever had the fortune to listen to. And wow. Not only is it unquestionably some of the best writing ever, but this story is just so full of twists and turns. My heart is broken for every single character for about a million different reasons. There are so many twists and turns that even now a couple of days out, my brain is still trying to make sense of it. Laia is really coming into her own, and I really enjoy seeing her become stronger and figure out how to beat her enemies. Elias is just as steady and compassionate as ever, and it truly makes me wonder how he could come from the Commandant. Now that we know more about that situation I’m really curious as to what his father was like. I hope the next books gives us more. This review is really difficult to write because I don’t want to spoil it for anyone. I will say that this is for fans of fantasy, magic, and war. 5 out of 5 brilliant Nightbringer stars!

“It takes only a split second for life to go horribly wrong. To fix the mess, I need a thousand things to go right. The distance from one bit of luck to the next feels as great as the distance across oceans. But, I decide in this moment, I will bridge that distance, again and again, until I win. I will not fail.”
