Verity by Colleen Hoover Review

Hi guys!!!! Sorry for the gap, but the holidays have me scrambling! I thought I had extra time without week between Thanksgiving and December, but it only allowed me to procrastinate. Whoops!

That being said I’m going to be talking about a book today that had my jaw dropping. This is NOT suitable for YA readers and it is dark and has some questionable content. I’m talking about Colleen Hoover’s newest book Verity. I wanted to give this disclaimer, because I know many of you are familiar with her usual YA/NA romance books, but this one is very very adult. It is a dark thriller that will have you by the edge of your seat but please don’t pass this onto the kiddos.

Verity left me gasping at the end. How could THIS book come from Colleen Hoover, one of the best and most beloved of romance authors? I don’t know, but I need her to write about a million more thrillers. This book was absolutely fantastic. It was misleading, authentic, and creepy as hell.

Lowen Ashleigh is contracted to finish series started by Verity Crawford. Verity has been in a car accident and is unable to continue writing. Lowen discovers an autobiography written by Verity and it has some deeply disturbing recollections in it. It leaves Lowen in an awkward place, wondering does she tell Verity’s husband Jeremy or keep it hidden? As Lowen progresses through the book it becomes more and more obvious that Jeremy needs to know, he remains devoted to his wife and he deserves to know the truth about her. This is where the book takes on a deeply suspenseful tone, as strange things begin happening around the house. Ultimately culminating in a crazy scene that is best left to future readers.
This book was fantastic and I haven’t really been able to move on in almost a week. Colleen Hoover really outdoes herself here. Her writing and structure is the best it’s ever been, and I only grow more amazed by her with every book. I really love that she stepped outside her romance genre and made this book happen. I love watching characters grow and change, but there’s something about watching an author take that chance too. 5 out of 5 stars.

Lowen Ashleigh is a struggling writer on the brink of financial ruin when she accepts the job offer of a lifetime. Jeremy Crawford, husband of bestselling author Verity Crawford, has hired Lowen to complete the remaining books in a successful series his injured wife is unable to finish.

Lowen arrives at the Crawford home, ready to sort through years of Verity’s notes and outlines, hoping to find enough material to get her started. What Lowen doesn’t expect to uncover in the chaotic office is an unfinished autobiography Verity never intended for anyone to read. Page after page of bone-chilling admissions, including Verity’s recollection of what really happened the day her daughter died.

Lowen decides to keep the manuscript hidden from Jeremy, knowing its contents would devastate the already grieving father. But as Lowen’s feelings for Jeremy begin to intensify, she recognizes all the ways she could benefit if he were to read his wife’s words. After all, no matter how devoted Jeremy is to his injured wife, a truth this horrifying would make it impossible for him to continue to love her.

A standalone romantic thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Colleen Hoover,
